5 Reasons to Quit Your Job and Jump Head First
June 4th, 2008 Posted in Making Money Online, PerspectiveI just passed my 1 year anniversary from when I first quit my job. If you’d told my old self where’d I be today, you would probably be confronted with a raised eyebrow.
To be fair, I didn’t quit my job to get into Internet Marketing, but I did jump head first into a business venture. My business partner and I were supposed to create educational software that would change the world. Due to early conflicts, it didn’t end up working out. Instead of getting my old job back, I decided to prove to myself that you could succeed even with a negative networth. After being quite uneasy for a few months, I managed to push through and make it happen.
I believe a significant part of my success was jumping in head first. After much thought and reflection, I present you 5 reason to quit your job and jump head first.
1. Motivation
When you make failure not an option or almost not an option, you somehow do incredible things with your time. I wouldn’t recommend this as a motivational strategy for the long term, but it sure does work well. It’s similar to how great artists keep starving themselves since their best ideas come from having nothing.
There’s two types of motivaiton as well: internal and external. You and I always carry what we believe is who we are, our identity. If you believe you are a person who deserves success, the mismatch will drive you to meet your identity. Externally, other people have an identity for you. You parents probably have the strongest one, which will make them bother you relentlessly. (Thanks Mom and Dad for annoying the crap out of me for months)
2. Energy
Having energy is extremely important if you’re planning to do something as stressful as being a pioneer in the Wild World Wide Web. There’s only so much caffeine you can inject in your blood in a day without dropping dead.
There were some days where I’d feel I should have gotten much more accomplished, but I didn’t realize my brain had to process all the new information. I didn’t give my brain’s need to consume large amounts of energy enough respect.
Even when I had school and my corporate job, I always wanted to create a profitable side business. It never worked out since I simply didn’t have enough energy to do it.
3. Time
There’s only 24 hours a day, and a portion of that has to go to sleep. You could try to be a polyphasic sleeper, but you’re still stuck with a finite amount of time. If you’re spending your prime hours working for someone else, then you’re not giving yourself a lot to work with.
At my 9-5 job, I remember budgeting a certain amount of hours for my entrepreneurial pursuits. I hardly ever got to them because I didn’t factor in all the social aspects of having a job. Sure, I could have been a hermit after 6 PM, but that’s not very bright either if you plan to move up.
4. Focus
Depending what kind of job you have, does it really end at 6 PM? I don’t think so. Your brain is always processing information from any activity. End result, scatter brain.
What if you’re a great multi tasker? Well it’s been proven that it is extremely detrimental to getting things done. If you’re a great multitasker, you’re probably an amazing single tasker.
5. You don’t know what you don’t know
Did I believe I could make over twice as much money compared to my 9-5 job a year ago? Heck no! Just thinking about it gives me a natural high. My golden rule is to commit to any field where I can clearly see people have already succeeded in it. For Internet Marketing, they are everywhere.
Without the Motivation, Energy, Time, and Focus, you drastically decreasing your odds of success. There has never been a better time than now to reassess your situation. If you’re smart and willing to work hard, you can make it in any field.
Just choose wisely.

I totally agree with you about energy, in fact I would make it number 1!! Without energy you won’t have the emotional/ physical juice to make it through the day (or night)! Number 2 for me would be wisdom. By that I mean totally immersing yourself in a subject until you can articulate it unconsciously.
